GTA 6 release time, pre-load and download size: what's confirmed

Everything you need to be playing as soon as possible on November 19, 2026, and which "leaks" to ignore.

Release day

• GTA VI comes out on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
• Store listings point to the game unlocking at midnight local time. Rockstar hasn't announced an exact unlock time, so treat that as likely but unconfirmed. We'll update this guide if it changes.

Pre-loading

• Digital pre-orders can start downloading at midnight local time on November 12, a week early.
• Boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc, so plan to download either way.

Download size

• Rockstar hasn't published the download size yet. The store listings don't show it either.
• The viral screenshots showing 677 GB or 750 GB were fakes.
• Plan for a big download, and expect a day-one patch on top. Clearing at least 200 to 250 GB is a sensible safety margin until the real number is out.

How much space your console really has

Consoles have less free space than the number on the box, because the system software takes some. Usable space on a new console, before any games, is roughly:

• PS5 with the original 825 GB drive: about 667 GB
• Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB
• Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB

The PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro have bigger drives and more room. Series S owners in particular should clear space early. To check yours, open Settings → Storage on PS5, or Settings → System → Storage devices on Xbox.

Quick checklist

1. Pre-order digitally if you want to pre-load
2. Clear space before November 12
3. Turn on automatic downloads and updates
4. Leave the console in rest mode on launch eve so the day-one patch installs
